This living room transformation focused on adding character, balance, and sophistication to a previously uninspired blank slate. The clients wanted to feature a painting by local artist Anne Molasky as the room’s focal point. To achieve this, custom built-ins with dramatic arches were designed and built, framing the artwork and flanking it with symmetrical bookshelves. The deep navy backdrop of the shelves adds depth, enhancing the impact of the painting. These built-ins also cleverly concealed an awkward off-center bump-out, bringing symmetry to the room.
The redesigned space now exudes a sense of luxurious comfort, with moody blues and greens inspired by the focal artwork. A performance-velvet merlot sofa introduces a bold pop of color, while a cream wool rug grounds the space and adds softness and texture. Custom linen window treatments with decorative trim provide subtle sophistication and elegance. Comfort was a key consideration in the design. Seating choices were made to accommodate both family movie nights and gatherings with extended family, ensuring the room is both functional and inviting.
